Zhenhai ZHENG'S 17 HOUSES - 镇海郑氏十七房

Zhenhai Zheng’s Seventeen Houses known as 镇海郑氏十七房 (Zhènhǎi Zhèngshì Shíqī Fáng) refers to a cultural spot located in Zhenhai District in a small village called Xiepu. It is composed of 17 folk houses built in the Qing Dynasty by the Zheng family.
The spot is about 5 minutes drive from Luotuo, 15 minutes from Zhenhai and about 45 minutes from Ningbo city center.

Opened in 2009 as a national tourist attraction, Zheng’s Seventeen Houses stands as the largest single-family house in China. It was the birthplace of Ningbo merchants including Zheng Shichang (1664-1728), who founded the Siheng Bank in Beijing during the middle period of the reign of Emperor Kangxi, 4th Qing Emperor of China (1661-1722).

Other family members and famous business tycoons also lived there such as Zheng Jinfeng, founder of the largest Post-Office in the late Qing dynasty; Zheng Fangzheng, founder of China’s first large refrigeration pioneer enterprise; Zheng Zunfa, founder of the Hero ink factory…

The seventeen houses of Zheng’s family represented the classical style of residences in Ming and Qing Dynasty in the south part of Yangtze River Basin. It had been built with contributions from succeeding generations of family members, who were among the most successful businessmen in China. The Zheng Family Merchant Group helped Shanghai to develop into the economic hub of the Far East by the 1930s.

Zheng’s Seventeen Houses provides a place in which tourists can enjoy ancient village architecture, traditional folk-custom, life of Ningbo merchants and local art.

If you want a quick getaway from bustling Ningbo, check out Zhenhai Zheng’s Seventeen Houses. Located about 45 minutes north-east from Ningbo city center, this is a nice family/friends outing in a quiet place with a park, a pond, bridges and ancient Chinese houses.

If you drive there – From Ningbo Express way, take Cihai North road and go straight for about 5 kms – Then turn right at the crossroad with the Xinhai Hotel on the right side – Then follow the signs for about 1.5km. For the bravest as it might take a bit more than 1 hour, the place can even be reached by bus (no 342) from Minglou Park (opposite Carrefour Jiangdong in Min’An Road).

In Zheng’s Seventeen Houses everyone can first grab a quick dose of fresh air. Small kids will love playing around the pond with gooses wandering around and a goat hiding behind the bush while parents will enjoy visiting the traditional ancient houses.
