The Train Station is located about 10 minutes by taxi from Tianyi Square, less than 5 minutes from Ningbo Nanyuan Hotel and just opposite the Ningbo Fortune Bond Hotel and the South Bus Station. Traveling from or to Ningbo by train is probably the most enjoyable way to travel providing we avoid the peak periods. Although there are 3 train stations in Ningbo, 2 of them are only open for freight, so that the ONLY station for passenger train is the Ningbo South Railway Station known as "Ningbo Nanzhan".
TAXIS : A car park and taxis are available under the station. Main entrance ramp is on the right side (facing the station) just before the place with lots of buses stops. To access the parking or to get a taxi from the station, use the pedestrian entrances located on both sides of the train station and go down the stairs to reach the parking and the official taxis stand.
TICKETS : If you face the train station, the tickets counter (6:15am - 7:45pm) is located on the right side. Different types of seats are available : Hard seats (Yingzuo), Soft seats (Ruanzuo) and VIP seats (Tedeng). We strongly advise you to buy a soft or a VIP seat if you want a bit of privacy and comfort. Concerning the prices, there is no big difference between hard and soft seats but concerning comfort soft seats are usually less crowded. Only very few trains have VIP (Tedeng) seats. Tickets can also be ordered from your hotel or in some traveling agency. A small fee (usually 5 or 10 Yuan) will then be added.
ELSE : So if you plan to go to Hangzhou or Shanghai, train might not be the quickest way but we should keep in mind that the arrival is right in the city center the cities. Moreover you are not confined to a place like traveling by coach. You can move here and there though being able to stretch a bit your legs. Depending on trains you can order a meal or buy some snacks and drinks.
Be careful that Shanghai has 2 passenger railway stations.
There is the Shanghai Railway Station(Shanghai Huoche Zhan) and the Shanghai South Railway Station (Shanghai Nanzhan) located at about 20 minutes by subway from the People's Square (Renmin Guangchang) right in the city center.
Located in the Xuhui District, the new Shanghai South Railway Stationis very modern and well designed. Shanghai South Railway Station features a circular design, the first of its kind in the world. It looks more like an airport than a conventional railway station. The subway is accessible at the 1st floor. Shanghai South Railway Station is serviced by Shanghai Metro Line 1 or Line 3.
The newly-built Shanghai South Railway Station has a 278-meter-in-diameter round steel and glass roof designed to allow in natural light. Nowadays most of the trains from/to Ningbo arrive/leave from the South Station.
Have a look on the Shanghai Subway Map to locate the Shanghai Railway Station and the new Shanghai South Train Station. As you can see both stations are on the line 1 of the Shanghai Metro but Shanghai South Station is a bit far from Renmin Guangchang (People's Square) and Nanjing lu (Nanjing road). Needs about 30 mns to reach the place. On the contrary the "old" Shanghai Railway Station is just 3 stations from the Shanghai People's Square that means less than 10 minutes. If you have an appointment in Shanghai and go there by train, we strongly advise you to take the subway. Reaching almost every corner of the city, covering all the prosperous areas, the Shanghai Metro is the fastest and most convenient way to move about in the downtown area. Of course, it is much cheaper than taxis (RMB3 to 5) but moreover it is clean, reliable and very convenient. Click on the map underneath to get the full Shanghai metro map.
