Ningbo Taxis - 宁波出租车
Ningbo Taxis - 宁波出租车
Ningbo taxis are mainly Volkswagen Jetta and Santana, sometimes Hyundai Sonata and a few other brands.
The minimum fare for Ningbo Taxis is RMB9 for the first 3 kilometers (1.86 mile) -
although it's written 8 on the meter, see why in paragraph 3 - This is quite enough for an average ride around Ningbo downtown ! Over 3 kms, add RMB1.8 for every 1km (0.62 mile) more.
After 23:00 till the next morning 5:00, the minimum fare is RMB9.80  for the first 3 kms and RMB2 for every 1km more.
You can sometimes see VIP white Audi cabs in Ningbo at the airport or at some hotels, please note that they will charge you more and you might need to fix the price BEFORE you get inside the cab.
1 - To get a taxi, just need to move your hand downward like if you wanted to say "Slow down". If the taxi is free, you will notice the red lamp up on the front passenger side and it will stop immedialtely. Please note that taxis cannot stop anywhere especially on arterial streets. So look for a taxi stop.
Always enter and get off a taxi from the passenger (right) side as both doors on the driver's side are always locked for security reason. You can choose to sit in the front or the back, it's up to you. In the front you should put the seat belt on.
2 - When you get inside the taxi, the driver will push down the red lamp which will automatically starts the meter.
You might find it difficult to get a taxi around 17:00 - 18:00 as it's the time for the night shift. The daytime drivers finish their 12 hours shift and go back to their company to get the night drivers replacing them. Try to avoid this period if possible otherwise be ready to have to "fight" a little to get one. Hotels might be an easier place to find a cab.
Taxi drivers usually don't speak English. Some of them might try to tell you a few words (Hello, Welcome) to make you happy but if you don't speak Chinese, you should have your destination written down somewhere on a paper or a business card. You can also try to use a few words like "Yizhi zou" (go straight on), "Wang zuo guai" (turn left), "Wang you guai" (turn right), "Dao le" (Arrived/here we are) and "Fapiao" (invoice)
3 - At the end of the journey, the passenger will be expected to pay the full fare displayed on the meter plus one yuan which is the petrol tax, unless (in specific cases) the driver and passenger had agreed on the final fare to be charged before the start of the journey.
If any conflict was to arise, remain calm and don't shout as it would only make things worst. But ask for a receipt (Fapiao) and write down the driver's license number in front of on the right side of the dashboard. Eventually note the car's plate number. Usually if the driver tried to cheat you, this will be enough for him to give you back some cash as drivers don't want to have trouble. Otherwise you can call for taxis complaints : 96520, as they don't speak English, you may need a Chinese friend to help you.
WHAT YOU ALSO SHOULD KNOW :
1. We don't need to tip taxi drivers in China, so are in restaurants and hotels.
2. When you get a taxi from the airport, the drivers might ask a higher price than real so take time to read this. There are 2 kinds of taxis at the arrivals : The "standard" green or yellow Wolkswagen Santana or Jeta type and some white VIP Audi. It is quite common to only see a few Audi waiting at the arrivals section. If this is the case when you arrive, you have two possibilities :
 - You don't care paying a bit extra money for the comfort of an Audi, then in this case ask the driver to use the meter or fix the fare BEFORE getting in the car (usually RMB60-70 for the city center)
 - If you don't want the Audi but prefer the "standard" taxi, you might have to wait for a while until other customers first take the Audi. Then some Jeta or Santana will be available...Remember that it is always better to have the meter on and ask for a receipt ("Yao Fapiao !").
The receipt identifies the taxi, the time and the date. The driver's license number is located on the front passenger side.
Here are some reference prices for our readers : (from the airport ) to Nanyuan Hotel RMB40, to Sheraton RMB50, to Beilun RMB150 (including the toll gate fee for expressway ), to Xiangshan RMB260.
3. If you want to rent a taxi for one day trip or even longer, you can call Ningbo Taxi Service Company 87831776 (Chinese only) the reference price is RMB400/day for a Santana and RMB700/day for a Buick GL8/ Audi A4, this price is including the driver's wage, not including the petrol, toll gate and parking fee. If you're an expatriate that has been living in China for long you may wish to rent the car without hiring the driver. In that case you will have to pay a rather high deposit and also leave a reliable certification (passport or ID card) at the renting company.
