Metro Ningbo Yinzhou store officially named Metro Cash & Carry Yinzhou Store and known in Chinese as 麦德龙现购自运鄞州商场 (Màidélóng Xiàngòu Zìyùn Yínzhōu Shāngchǎng) is a superstore located in the south part of the city center (about 15 minutes drive from Tianyi Square) and surrounded by 3 main roads. On the north side is Huancheng South road and the highway going to Beilun, on the east side is Qianhu North road and on the west and south sides (store’s entrance) is Maidelong road. Metro store is opposite one of the largest international residence called “East Lake Garden” (Dōnghú Huāyuán).
First international superstore to open in Ningbo in 1998, Metro Yinzhou had a grand reopening celebration in December 2007 announcing a new organization and an extension of the shopping area to 11000m2.
Metro is a B2B type of store targeting on hotels, restaurants, caterers and service companies. Customers are mostly professionals but private end consumers are also accepted as far as they own the store’s membership card. This card is free and can be obtained on the spot if you bring your passport and a business card.
Metro Ningbo sells a wide range of imported groceries and products including meat, cheese, fish and seafood, pasta, chocolate, cakes, biscuits as well as wines, spirits, beers and mineral water, tea and coffee and much more. Metro is also offering many non food items like clothes, appliances, computers, office equipment, kitchenware, etc…As a pioneer in the country, Metro Cash & Carry China promotes environmental awareness through encouraging customers to utilize reusable shopping bags.

In November 1963, the first Metro Market was opened by Otto Beisheim (born 3 January 1924) in Essen-Altenessen, Germany. One year later (1964) the Metro Group was founded and never stopped its expansion to reach sales of € 31.1 billion in 2010 (status: July 31st, 2010).
Today, Metro Cash & Carry is the largest sales division of the German trade and retail giant Metro AG with about 700 stores in 30 countries and more than 100,000 employees across the world. Otto Beisheim, Founder, was named by Forbes “World’s 249 richest man in 2010″ with a fortune of $3.6 bn.
Concerning China, the first Metro Cash & Carry opened in Shanghai, in 1996. The company was also the first to gain permission from the China Central Government to set up chain operations in all major cities.

With the largest imported food and beverage section, Metro Cash & Carry Yinzhou seems to be the most popular superstore among expatriates in Ningbo.It is nice to be able to find western ingredients and imported groceries not normally seen in average supermarkets. These include a wide range of meat (like beef, lamb, pork, poultry), cheese, pasta, noodles, fish and sea foods (like oysters, lobsters, smoked salmon, shrimps), cereals, coffee, tea, biscuits, spices, seasonings and sauces. Concerning drinks, one can find several aisles filled up with exclusive wines, champagnes and spirits as well as imported beers, mineral waters like Evian, Perrier, San Pellegrino and much more.
But Metro is not limited to food items, also providing many various products such as office supplies and stationary, cash registers, phones and fax machines and many more items. Moreover prices are quite competitive.
As Metro is a B2B store supplying hotels, restaurants, caterers and institutional buyers, be aware that some items might be supplied in bulk or big quantities. Furthermore, customers must be registered and show their membership card when checking out. Nevertheless, expats wishing to become members can bring along their passport and a business card to the front desk. That should do it.

Concerning environment and service, don’t expect too much on that side. As a warehouse-style supermarket, staff is usually busy unpacking, arranging or stacking pallets of merchandise with forklifts. It would be nice though if they could avoid blocking aisles restocking upper shelves during selling hours peak.
Metro Cash and Carry recently altered their payment policy and now accepts bank and credit cards which is a great and convenient news for many customers.

In an effort to become more earth friendly, the store does not supply plastic bags but reusable canvas bags. Of course customers are welcomed to bring along their own shopping bags. This is a great initiative and contribution from Metro Company in reducing the carbon foot print. Congratulations!
Location and access to Metro Yinzhou is very convenient as the store is not only close to the city center but also close to the highway which makes it easily reachable even for customers coming from Beilun or other districts around. If you drive there, do not worry about where to leave your car since there is a huge parking lot just in front of the superstore. Otherwise there also are many taxis around and 2 bus stops, close to the store’s entrance, with many lines serving the city. Metro Yinzhou definitely deserves a visit! (Editorial Team – 2012 June)
