Ningbo Overview - 宁波概况

Located in the middle coastline of China in Zhejiang province, Ningbo faces Shanghai accross the Hangzhou Bay. Ningbo nestles on the junction of three rivers is about an hour and a half by car from Hangzhou the province capital. Long noted for its dynamic merchant class, Ningbo has a strong manufacturing sector and makes high-quality goods for export, particularly textiles, fabrics, and garments. Ningbo is one of China's coastal cities opened to the outside world via the country's second largest harbor. The Ningbo port located in Beilun district is one of the largest natural deep-water port in East China.The city has been an important center of foreign trade since ancient times and is home to the 7,000-year-old "Hemudu" civilization.

Ningbo is only 30mns by plane from Shanghai or 4 hours by rail if one prefers to relax in the comfort of the train.
The construction of a 36 kms bridge crossing the Hangzhou Bay will be achieved in 2008 and will allow cars and buses to reach Shanghai in only 2 hours.

- 2 counties (Xiangshan and Ninghai)
- 3 county-level cities (Yuyao, Cixi and Fenghua)
- 6 urban districts (Haishu, Jiangdong, Jiangbei,Yinzhou, Zhenhai and Beilun)

The agglomeration of Ningbo includes :

It has a total area of 9365 square kilometers with a population of about 6 million inhabitants. In the agglomeration of Ningbo, the city urban area represents 1,033km2 and a population of 1,5 million inhabitants.

Ningbo Tianyi Square is the most fashionable shopping area in Ningbo city center with lots of boutiques and restaurants.

Ningbo Lao Waitan is Ningbo Old Bund and was the place where cargo ships docked, cleared customs, and warehoused their goods. Today Ningbo Lao Waitan is a fashionable place with lots of bars, clubs and restaurants. At night, nice view on the river.

Ningbo is a dynamic and commercial city and it was recently regarded as one of China's top 10 outstanding cities for investment.

department stores, superstores (Auchan, Carrefour, Wal-Mart, Metro, etc...) and hundreds of shops all worth discovering...

What we call Ningbo urban district is the jointure of the 3 following districts :

Haishu comes from the DrumTower (Gulou) which was named Haishu Lou.
Haishu means "the first sunlight over the sea".
JiangDong means "East of river" and JiangBei means "North of river"

The CITY CENTER of Ningbo is mainly focused on Haishu.
As you can see on the map underneath Haishu is on the left part of the river and includes the Town Hall of Ningbo near Gulou, ChengHuang Temple (ChengHuang Miao) and Tianyi Square (Tianyi Guangchang).

Note that as soon as we cross bridges like Jiangxia, Ling or Qing Qiao, we start to be in Jiangdong district.
