2006-11-16 : Chinese in Paris
2006-11-16 : Chinese in Paris
中国人在巴黎(唐人街和中国游客)
Chinatown in Paris is very famous and it is now considered as a touristy place for French people and foreign visitors. Still it's a bit wrong to call it Chinatown, it should be called "Asiantown" as we can also find a lot of people from Vietnam, Cambodia and other Eastern countries...
Chinese tourists are now coming to Paris and Europe in general. For the last 30 years we were used to mainly see Japanese people as the only Asian tourists visiting Paris. I remember that still in 2002 (only 4 years ago), I never found a single city guide translated in Chinese. Today in 2006, time has changed and city guides are now available in Chinese as well as lots of other documentation and flyers.
CHINATOWN started in Paris in the 1930s and 40s. Chinese from Wenzhou province came to work for the Jewish traders in leather and wholesale businesses. But it's only in the late 1970's and early 1980's that Chinatown really took off in Paris with the arrival of people from Vietnam and Cambodia...Today the different Asian communities leave together and work mainly in the Import-Export business. As you can see below, there are today hundreds of Chinese shops in Chinatown.
