2006/December/30: Have you seen the new underground pathway near Gulou ? It allows pedestrians to safely cross Zhong Shan Xi Lu (Zhong Shan West Road) via a tunnel rather than getting their way on the surface through the busy traffic. It is not the first pedestrian walkway that has been built on this street as there is another one up at Tianyi Square level (built about 2 years ago). You can again find another one in Cheng Huang Miao (Cheng Huang Temple) just at Tianyi Square rear side. We personally find these underpasses very convenient, much safer for the pedestrians and for the car drivers too. They no longer have to worry about people crossing the lanes even when traffic lights tell them not to. This is especially true at peak time when lots of people get off work and rush back home. These pathways obviously benefit everyone as they also help to keep the traffic moving...Well done !
2006/December/27: Hey you ! Stop resetting your computer and switching on/off your ADSL modem ! You have a problem trying to access websites outside China ? Well you're not alone. Just click on the image to understand why. So when will communication be back again ? No estimation for the moment but we can guess that it will take at least a few days (weeks ?) as it seems that the damage is serious...Anyway don't blame your computer, he (she?) is innocent !
2006/December/28: Do you like tasty bread ? It is interesting to see how the bakery foods industry has been developing during the last 3 years. Although eating bread has never been part of the Chinese culture, it seems that people in Ningbo enjoy a sweetie break during the day. If bread made in China is usually quite different from the western made bread like the French baguette, we still can start to find now some acceptable croissants and that was not the case until recently. Have you seen the newly opened "Bread Talk" located behind Tianyi Square ? The place is clean and nicely decorated. We bought there some croissants and found
them a bit "lighter", easier to digest compared to the croissants of New Maxim's although price is a little bit higher in Bread Talk. (RMB 4 in Bread Talk and RMB 2,50 in New Maxim's). But this is only our opinion. So why don't you drop in Bread Talk and have a try by yourself ?
2006/December/25: HelloNingbo wish you all a MERRY CHRISTMAS !!! Chocolate is probably the more popular gift item throughout the world and Christmas is surely the time to eat chocolates. Did you see how many brands are displayed in Ningbo shops and supermarkets ? If prestigious brands like Leonidas start to enter the local market (Ground floor of GuGo shopping center in Tianyi Square), we can also find some industrial brands making great products. One of them is the well known LU company from France. Lu is not making pure chocolate bars but biscuits and amongst them is the famous "Le Petit Ecolier" which means "The Little Schoolboy". "Le Petit Ecolier" is a butter biscuit topped with different chocolate flavors. We can find "Le Petit Ecolier" in Ningbo Metro but this time we found in Auchan Jiangdong what seems to be a limited offer. A beautiful red metal box including 4 different flavors type of biscuits : Milk, Hazelnut, Dark, Extra Dark. Very nice idea ! Afraid of gaining weight ? If eaten in moderation, chocolate won't change your shape ! A standard box of "Le Petit Ecolier" in Auchan will cost you RMB18.95 and the red metal box offer with 4 flavors, RMB88. Have a try and enjoy a "moment of sensual pleasure" !
2006/December/26: How many Starbucks Coffee now in Ningbo ? Ok we had the first one opening in Tianyi Square about 5 years ago, then was the one in Laowai Tan, then the one next to Portman (Sheraton) and now a new Ningbo Starbucks Coffee opening soon in Gugo Shopping mall in Tianyi Square. This makes a total of 4 right now. Congratulations Starbucks ! It's going so fast that even their official website is out of date !!!
2006/December/20: HelloNingbo has now a new logo that will be progressively updated on all the website's pages. New weather forecast that now displays a quick 2 days weather forecast on the index page and 2 new pages for the 5 days weather forecast (one in degrees celsius, the other one in degrees fahrenheit). Some of our international readers also requested the local Ningbo time to be displayed somewhere. It's now done with the new analog clock on the right. Thank you all for your support & more soon !

2006/December/05: If you live in Ningbo City Center and want Chinese Classes, there is now an answer. Ningbo CFLI (Chinese Foreign Language Institute) recently opened to satisfy the increasing need of foreigners wanting to learn Chinese. CFLI is conveniently located on the 34th floor of the tallest building (Zhong Nong Xin) facing the main entrance of Tianyi Square. CFLI offer all levels of Chinese (beginner to advanced) either in private or group classes. Ben Jenkin (from UK) is the Chief Executive Officer and he perfectly knows the daily problems foreigners are facing when they cannot speak Chinese. 2006/December/13: Yesterday was a special day in AIAN international school located in Beilun. All the classes were preparing a Christmas cake. From Kindergarten to High school students, everyone enjoyed this special "cooking lesson" and parents too....

2006/December/23: Yesterday was the Grand Opening of Ningbo Wanda Plaza ! It is a new commercial area located in Yinzhou District on the way to Ningbo Metro supermarket and next to Ningbo Huamao Foreign Language School. We went to Wanda Plaza by taxi and paid RMB15 from Carrefour and RMB14 to come back to Tianyi Square. This gives you an idea of the distance. "Wanda Plaza" is called "Wanda Guangchang" in Chinese. Wanda comes from the name of the investment group which is one of the biggest in Dalian. "Wan" meaning "10 thousand" and "Da" meaning "lead to" can be interpreted as "Leading to success". Wanda Plaza hosts a hundred shops, a dozen of restaurants including fast food like Dicos, Mc Donald's, KFC and Pizza Hut, superstores like Wal-Mart and B&Q (DIY supplies and goods for the home and garden) and other department stores like Suning (electronic appliances). If you're
driving, there are several very convenient car parks. Ningbo Wanda Plaza is more than a shopping center. It's a wide and long term project for Yinzhou district to build there a center of life including residences and much more activities...By the way a few shops and the Wal-Mart were not opened yet but it should be a question of 1 or 2 weeks. Anyway quite a few of you are back home right now for the Christmas festivities but when you come back to Ningbo, drop there and maybe find some goods you were always looking for..
2006/November/30: A meeting was held in Beilun NETD Hospital (kāifāqū yīyuàn) to introduce the new Foreign Medical Clinic. Dr. Dennis Middleton from New Zealand who is in charge of the project, introduced the new facilities. Around 50 foreigners went there and were all concerned by the improvement of the medical care in Ningbo. The Foreign Medical Clinic is located on the 5th floor and has 2 English-speaking nurses. For small matters you can directly go there but for serious operation Dr Middleton still advise you to go to Shanghai. 2006/November/03: The legendary ship Gotheborg arrived in Zhoushan for a short stay. The ship will be open to the public from 3rd to the 5th of November, and the total visitors allowed on board will be limited to 10000. So don't miss the chance to have a close "touch" with this famous antique ship actually parked in Shenjiamen.

2006/November/16: Hi Guys ! Long time, no read ! Yes Folks, I was back in Paris for several weeks and you know what ? I realized that there were more Chinese people over there and probably in Europe in general. Of course the Chinese community in Chinatown has been there for years but I saw quite a few newcomers now holding shops and cafes around the place. I also saw quite a lot of Chinese tourists wandering around with their cameras. So more Chinese in Europe, more foreigners in China, well it's definitely time for us to learn mandarin ! 2006/November/21: Days and nights, people are working on the construction of the new bridge that will temporary replace the Xinjiang Bridge actually closed. This bridge is very important as it is connecting Tianyi Square to Lao Waitan. Should be ready for the next Spring Festival !

2006/November/27: FILMKA STUNT SHOW finally performed in Ningbo Stadium located about 100 meters from Carrefour supermarket in Jiangdong. Their show was to be held in September but had been postponed several times and tonight was not the best weather for the team to perform. The soft stadium track was filled with water and the cars were like running on a skating rink. Still the Team Filmka did their best to entertain the audience with quite a few funny action scenes. We had a police car chasing robbers firing on them, a robber that was going to be hanged on a gallows before a car kicked down the huge stool he was standing on...Motorbikes also performed a few stunts but were obviously very concerned by the state of the track that should have been...dry. 2006/November/29: Have you ever tried The Riviera Restaurant in the recently opened Howard Johnson Hotel? No ? Well you should as the place is GREAT ! The Riviera Restaurant offers a buffet with a very delicious mix of Western-Chinese dishes. We enjoyed our meal over there. All the staff is able to speak a little bit of English and the supervisors like the lovely Tina are completely fluent. Quite a few foreign staff too, working in and outside the kitchen. By the way we also met Jonathan who is a French guy keeping an eye on all the dishes and tables. So you cannot say we don't take care of you ! Price is RMB138/person, children less than 1m20 pay half price and babies less than 1m eat free. Howard Johnson Hotel (in Chinese Huáqiáo Háoshēng Jiǔdiàn) is located in Haishu, 230 Liuting road (Liǔtīng jiē), not far from the Moonlake. So how does the place look like ? 2006/October/21: We've discussed last week where the David Statue might be placed. 2:00 pm today, we finally saw him in front of the Ningbo Grand Theater facing Yaojiang River. A traditional lion dancing party was hold to celebrate David having his new home. Did you get the correct answer?

2006/October/24: With students coming from 24 different countries, the Access International Academy Ningbo (AIAN) is like a mini United Nation. Today is their annual UN Day celebration. Students all put their traditional clothes and enjoy the various cuisines from all over the world. Thanks parents a lot! I really like the food they made !

2006/October/26: Found an interesting shop in Tianyi Square (Tianyi Guangchang) selling all kinds of Chinese craftworks. It's just behind the Hymall supermarket with many small shops. It's a little bit like the souvenir shop in Pudong Airport, but far better price ! The name and address is "Xiu"-Shuijin Jie 55 Hao ("绣" - 天一广场水晶街55号). Don't forget to ask a discount price for what you like ! Bank cards are accepted.

2006/September/04: It was today the BIG day for lots of children (and parents too !) as it was the start of the new school year. We followed the arrival of the students in AIAN in Beilun. Then quite a few parents came to visit HelloNingbo's new headquarters just next to AIAN and stayed in the coffee bar for a chat and a few drinks. (We appreciated your visit and hope to see you all back soon.) HelloNingbo then dropped in the school at lunchtime with Debbie Dean in charge of the Parents Association and pupils had already started to make friends. Nice atmosphere and nice lunch too ! A pitty I could not go back to school...

2006/September/21: From the 1st of October the train from Shanghai to Lhasa (capital of Tibet) is available. The train line is T164/165 , return line is T166/163. Departure from Shanghai 16:11 ---> arrival in Lhasa 19:50 (3rd day). Total time is 51h39mns with 4373kms. Return from Lhasa 8:32 ---> arrival in Shanghai 13:45 (3rd day). Total time is 53h13mns. Soft bed price is RMB1266 (upstairs) RMB1314 (downstairs). Hard bed price is RMB797 (up) RMB821 (middle) 845 (down). Hard seat is RMB406.

2006/September/19: Due to road works on Jichang Road (road that leads to Lishe Airport), traffic has been slowing down during the last few days, especially in the morning time (7:00 to 8:00). Passengers leaving Ningbo to the airport must schedule to spend more time on the road in order to avoid missing their planes. Alternate routes are Yinzhou Road or Younger Road.

2006/September/18: Harborland Theme Park, located in Beilun (25 minutes by taxi from the city center) is having a special timetable (7:00 to 17:00) during the Mid-Autumn Festival. On October the 6th, an evening performance will be held with Russian dances from 17:00 to 21:30. For that night, the entrance ticket is only RMB70 for adults and free for children under 1m10. 2006/September/30: The world smallest mobile has been recently produced in Ningbo.This mobile named "Hantel" D1818 is made by Yidong Electronic Company and has a slim body no bigger than a match box. But still it has all the functions available on a PDA, even including an internet tablet ! Guess the price ? 800RMB ! Yes you read well "Height Hundred Yuans" !!!
