"Is there a nice beach close to Ningbo ?"
This is a question that often comes again and again in lots of discussions whether they're on the net or around a table... I must admit that I’ve been to quite a few nice beaches but far away in Sanya (Hainan) or in Qingdao (Shangdong), not really around Ningbo. And my last trip to Putuoshan goes back to 5 years ago ![]() Want to know where this beach is ? less than 3 hours from Ningbo ? Go on reading ![]() So what to do during these October holidays ? Take a plane to Paris, London or LA ? Everywhere is so crowded and I hadn't planned anything. And what about my family ? What about my 7 months daughter that takes swimming lesson twice a week and loves water? After 1 hour on internet, things were decided, we would go this time to Zhujiajian Island ( 朱家尖). It’s quite close to Ningbo and next to Zhoushan Island (舟山) How to go there ? Very easy ! 1 - Go from Ningbo to Beilun then head to the Baifeng Ferry Port (白峰码头) - Total is less than 1 hour drive The fee for the ferry is quite reasonable : 55RMB for the car and the driver Add 13RMB for every other passengers - insurance is 2RMB/person Once the car is parked, every one goes on the upper deck where meals and drinks are available Several ferries are doing the rotation which allows around 5 departures/hour. Tip: Avoid coming back to Ningbo on Sunday evenings. Do leave before 15:00 or after 20:00 Serious traffic congestion can occur as everybody wants to go back home at the same time. Lot of lorries with seafood are also crossing between 16:00 and 20:00... 2 - Then the ferry lasts 40 minutes and arrives in Zhoushan – Dinghai (舟山 - 定海) A bridge between Zhoushan and Zhujiajian does the connection. Fee is RMB30 3 – It takes about 40 minutes to drive from Zhoushan ferry port to Zhujiajian Island(朱家尖). See the location of the island on the map below We finally arrived to the outstanding residence where we had booked an apartment Our apartment was very well positioned, on the 2nd floor where you see the balcony Inside the hardware was great but the service was totally ineffective. Read below why These apartments belong to some landlords who ask local agencies to take care of the rental. The problem is that the agency in charge did no more than giving us the keys and collecting the money... As they charge RMB800/night, we think we're entitled to have some toilet paper and more than 2 towels available. ![]() As usual it's often the concept of service that is missing. Quite a few details spoiled our stay. But we found a solution the next day, keep on reading ! ![]() The whole place is wonderfully designed, clean and very quiet. We really liked it ! The beach was less than 10 minutes walk from our residence you can see in the back... Zhoujiajian Beach : 60RMB/person, children under 120cm half price, free entrance after 17:30 The design of the street lamps, buildings and houses around the place is great ! On the 1st of October the beach was crowded but hopefully far less than lots of scenic spots around the country... Tip: Bring your own beach umbrella. Renting the red ones you see here was 100RMB/hour. If you plan to stay 4 or 5 hours, it'll pay your hotel room...(see further on) After 1 day over there, we indeed enjoyed the place and knew we did the right choice. Just one thing was upsetting us a bit, the fact that this agency didn’t want to do any effort to make our stay easier. Still we did want to stay in this residence. One solution could have been to change apartment and agency. Several guys met on the street told us they also had some apartments in charge in the same residence. But we might face the same problem again. Finally I really had a great idea ! ![]() I just happened to see a brand new Super 8 hotel. Although the place will officially opened on October the 28th, we still managed to get 2 rooms inside with my family and didn't regret our choice. We had the comfort and design of our previous residence + a great service ! Hey,
We went to Zhujiajian November 3rd after reading this post. It was great. Mostly it felt good to get away from all the people. The island really did feel isolated. We did not have a car, but managed very easily to make our way from the ferry terminal on Zhoushan to Zhujiajian using public transportation. On the way back, we took a taxi, which was also very convenient and we stopped at the drive-thru McDonalds. This was a first for us in China. We stayed at the Super 8 after finding out that the apartments were more expensive than we originally thought. The Super 8 met all of our needs though and was very clean! The pool was empty....maybe they will fill it back up when the weather turns warm again. We explored a number of good beaches. The one right out in front of the hotel has a 60 kuai entrance fee. But if you walk north on the road you come to Dong Sha which was free. There was a hotel overlooking the beach where you could get drinks. If you walked south from the beach for 10 minutes you come to another beach with even fewer people. It looked like many people camped on the beach overnight, which might be an option worth exploring. The beach had some garbage left over from the previous nights inhabitants but both the water and air were very clear. I haven't seen many other places like this in China. It just felt strange that we were relatively so close to Beilun. We are excited to get back. I have the feeling that there is a lot of exploring that could be done out there on Zhujiajian and on surrounding islands. Thanks for the good trip tip Patrick, Molly |

Hello, Patrick/All. Do you know if now with the Zhoushan bridge there is no need to take the ferry? Is it possible to go all the way in car to Zhujiajian Island?
Best Regards, |

Yes, you can drive on the bridge... as the Zhenhai - Zhoushan Dao bridge connects you, although you will actually exit into Zhoushan and then travel by road to the separate bridge that connects the far side of Zhoushan with Zhujiajian. It costs RMB110 on the Zhenhai - Zhoushan bridge, with no cost for the Zhoushan - Zhujiajian bridge. Motorcycles though are banned from using the Zhenhai - Zhoushan Dao bridge
![]() An alternative island experience is TaoHau Dao. The people are somewhat friendlier, plus there are some great hidden gems and places/roads/beaches to explore and there's less price gouging IMO. |
